WEEK NINETEEN

I had the morning free again, so pottered about in the morning, and finally gave in, and bought a few tops. They are marvelously impractical, and I will never be able to wear them at home, but it was a hot day, and I liked them, so there we go. I then decided to cash in on some free food I had stored up, so went to get an iced chai, and some more bloody peanut butter cookies – I don’t know what they put in them, but I suspect it might be crack. They are just so good. And, this time they were free, which to be honest I think was fair as I had already spent a fortune on them! I then meandered down to the chai tent, through all of the clothes stalls, and enjoying the sun, and when I got there enjoyed lying around all afternoon, and just doing nothing. Beautiful. Eventually I thought I would go and have a proper nap in the tent, however this idea was very quickly dashed, as I climbed in and realised it was about 400 degrees in there, and it wouldn’t be cold again for a good few hours. So I went to drink some beer and have a chat with everyone I was working with. Before I was officially meant to start I got some more free food – this time in the form of a baked potato, which was amazing, and meant I no longer had to eat more dumplings. Hurray! So, my final shift had started, and I actually did some work, not much, but some, so I continued drinking beer and chatting away,, and then something miraculous happened – the thumping music, which had been going for the last three days, stopped. When my shift was over no one turned up to cover me, so I was there all evening, but to be honest it wasn’t that bad, and it wasn’t as if we were rushed off our feet or anything. And, it transpired that as I was there I was offered a job at ‘Big Day Out’ in Melbourne, which would be cool, I’ll keep my fingers crossed!  Once work had finished, we all started to rip everything up so we had less to do the next day, and then people went to bed slowly but surely. I decided to go and get my final waffle – they had become a bit of a favourite, along with the cookies. And so it was my final night in a tent for a while, and as it was warm it was lovely, so I drifted off in the blissful silence.
I woke up before my alarm, which I thought was quite impressive, so I lay there enjoying the sun, with my little canvas door open. We all got up pretty early, and as I was ready the earliest (how did that happen?)  I got to go on the coffee run, and as they were starting to pack up I managed to get the whole lot for free – hurray! And some final few peanut butter cookie crumbs – healthy healthy breakfast! Everyone else left throughout the morning, and we all just kept trying to fit everything back in the ute and the trailer, which was a bit of a jigsaw, but in the end, there were four of us left, and we managed to just about get everything fitted in. Not before I had managed to drop a huge metal table on my toe, and left a little pool of blood next to our campsite. It really bloody hurt! So, with everything packed up, and tents dismantled, I had just enough time to have a shower, even if it was cold, it was still appreciated after being covered in so much dust and crap after clearing up. Me and tony then got into the ute, and headed in the direction of Melbourne. It took a few hours go get there, including our little break to get a drink and a snack, but we were finally on the outskirts of the city. He had agreed to drop me at home, which was awesome, however, just as we were getting to the turn-off for Yarraville, he wasn’t paying attention, and missed it. This meant we had to continue over the West Gate Bridge, and into the centre of the city. We had to go to drop off some of the stock, and then Tony said he would get me a taxi, as he didn’t want to drive back to Yarraville, so, I got my pay too, which really wasn’t so bad – considering I did no work for a few days!  And I also got given $50 for the taxi home, and I thought this was excessive, and thought I’d get to keep some of that too, but I had no idea how mad rush-hour traffic was, and $45 later we pulled up at the back gate. I couldn’t believe it had cost so much! When I got back, I was greeted with a full house, as I had forgotten that it was Burn’s Night, so Will was cooking and we were going to have a big feast. To be honest I was pretty tired, and kind of just wanted to sleep, but the idea of a proper meal kept me awake. We all spent the evening eating some proper Scottish food, and drinking lots of wine. And then I slept.
I was actually up surprisingly early, and pottered about in the morning, and then it was time for the mass exodus to Adelaide, and Will left that afternoon, not to be back for two months. Madness. I then went into Yarraville and bought some tasty snack to munch, and decided that my New Year’s Resolution would start on the 1st of February – January had gone pretty wrong already! Me and Toni went to Williamstown beach to let the dogs have a run, and this is exactly what Joey did – she just didn’t stop, it was hilarious. Turnip, as usual, had a slightly more civilised outing, and just looked pretty, as usual. The evening was spent doing very little, as was the rest of the day really, and then I went to sleep in my own bed. Kind of. A futon mattress on the floor of Will and Toni’s room – it seemed pretty cosy to me.
On Thursday I decided to pull my finger out my arse and actually book my plane ticket to Adelaide, and I was shocked at having to pay so much, but I had left it stupidly late, and decided that I could save a few bucks by flying stupidly in the morning – I had checked the times for the shuttle bus from the City and the only problem was that I was going to have to get up at 5am. Not so good. But, I would start getting paid when I got there, so it was a price I had to pay. Yeuch. I was also entrusted with Will’s credit card, and it was quite tempting to be silly, but I decided to be a grown up and not buy clothes! That’s pretty much all I did for the whole day – what a lazy bitch!
We had an exciting trip planned to go to Coles the next morning, and Toni was going to drive me and Kris there before she was leaving for the airport too, so I took the opportunity to buy lots of crap and just eat silly food for the day. I’d been a grown up enough for the week! I had a plan to go to an outdoor cinema in Williamstown in the evening, but I tried to get Phil and Rowan into it, but they weren’t up for it, and I wasn’t really in the mood to go on my own. Instead, in the afternoon I got the joy of showering the dogs! Yuck. Our flat-mate took them for a walk, and they both absolutely bloody stank, it was gross! By the end of it Turnip hated me. Surprise, surprise. So, I spent the rest of the night with her scowling at me, but not really doing anything.
After having so many days doing very little, I decided to go into the City, and get a tattoo. Oh my God. One of Toni’s friends was in Melbourne for a few days from Brisbane, and he is a tattoo artist, and I was going to take advantage of this, and finally get a tattoo I have wanted for years. And then it came to the time to call him, and I was starting to have second thoughts, and third thoughts, and a few more after that! So I put it off for a while, and had a beer in the scorching heat. With a bit of dutch courage, I called him, only to find out that he was now fully booked for the weekend, but if I was ever in Brisbane...Boring! It was actually when I heard this I realised I really wanted it, and was gutted I couldn’t have it – nothing like wanting what you can’t have! So, now with the afternoon to myself all of a sudden, I called Hannah for a chat, and a catch-up with gossip from home. Just what I needed. And, with my full dose of a Scottish accent, I wandered into Yarraville to get some ingredients for a cheesecake I was planning on making! Exciting! The weather was getting pretty damned hot, and my Scottish constitution wanst baring up well, so I treated myself to a thickshake from the place in Yarraville I have always peered through the window at. And the heat did not surrender for the rest of the day, and into the night. My god it was hot, even in the middle of the night.
In the morning, it was even hotter again. And, after looking at the weather, I learned it was going to get to a scorching 40 degrees – and sadly, my plan was to hide from the sun as much as possible. I felt slightly silly, but it was really, really hot. So, I decided the thing I could do inside was to make my cheesecake that I’d planned. Once that was out of the oven and cooling I thought I would go into Yarraville to buy something for dinner, and I really didn’t think it could still be so hot, but I was, so when I got back I sat in front of a fan, with the curtains closed, drinking 2 litres of chilled Solo. Ridiculous. But it felt so good at the time! The rest of the afternoon was spent inside, watching the Australian Open, and trying to care if Murray won. He didn’t anyway, so I’m glad I didn’t invest too much.
And so that was my week, and I have finally been exposed to Melbourne heat, and I am starting to get slightly scared about what Adelaide will have in store for me – the only thing people have told me about it is that it’s hot! But, I’d find out in a week….
